Hemorrhoids are swollen veins located in and around your rectum and anus, and they are usually a result of increased pressure on the rectum. As we get older, our risk of developing hemorrhoids increases – it is very common in patients over the age of 50. It is also common in pregnant women due to the extra pressure in the anal area.
The symptoms of hemorrhoids are uncomfortable and unpleasant. They include pain in the rectum, itchiness, and bleeding. Depending on the type of hemorrhoids you have, you may even see a protrusion of the vein in the anal area if you check it using a mirror.

What Causes Hemorrhoids?

When you sit on the toilet for a long time trying to have a bowel movement, the blood actually pools to the rectum and causes the blood vessels to enlarge. Coupled with straining, which increases pressure on the anal canal, this can cause the veins to swell and bleed.
Pregnant women are likely to get hemorrhoids due to the uterus pressing against the rectal veins. Moreover, the pressure on your lower rectum when you push when delivering the baby can also cause hemorrhoids, as the veins can swell and push outward.
As we age, our muscles tend to weaken – including our sphincter muscles around the anus. In addition, the tissues that support the veins in the rectal area also weaken, and this can increase susceptibility to hemorrhoids.
How Are Hemorrhoids Treated?
Hemorrhoids respond well to treatment and minor lifestyle changes. This may include:

- Stool softeners
- A high-fiber diet
- Drinking lots of water
- Exercising
- Losing weight
The healthier you are overall, the less likely you are to develop hemorrhoids.
Difference Between External and Internal Hemorrhoids
Both types of hemorrhoids are characterized by the same symptoms, such as pain, itching, swelling, and bleeding. However, external hemorrhoids have one or more veins protruding out of the rectum, whereas internal hemorrhoids are still inside the rectum. You cannot see internal hemorrhoids, but you will notice other symptoms such as pain or bleeding when passing stools.
