A primary care team is a group of health care professionals who work together to develop a plan of care that meets the patient’s needs and provides comprehensive, patient-centered care. The team may include doctors, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants.
Let’s talk about every member of the primary care team and what they can do for you.
Family Doctor
A family doctor is a medical professional who provides primary care services to patients of all ages. They are trained in a variety of medical disciplines and are able to diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions affecting infants, children, and adults. In addition to providing direct patient care, family doctors also play an important role in educating patients about preventive health measures and promoting a healthy lifestyle.
Internal Medicine Doctor
Internal medicine doctors are primary care physicians who focus on the diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions that affect adults, or patients who are 18 years or older. They are highly experienced in treating patients with multiple chronic illnesses, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and arthritis, and provide continuity of care. You can choose between a family doctor or an internal medicine doctor as your primary care physician.
Nurse Practitioner
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse who has completed an accredited graduate or post-graduate level program in nursing. Nurse practitioners provide a wide range of health care services, including diagnosing and treating common medical conditions, prescribing medications, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, and counseling on lifestyle changes to promote good health. Nurse practitioners work in collaboration with physicians and other members of the primary care team.
Physician Assistant
A physician assistant (PA) is a medical professional who provides care and treatment under the supervision of a licensed physician. Physician assistants can work in all areas of medicine, including primary care, surgery, and specialty care. They perform many of the same duties as physicians, including taking medical histories, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, prescribing medications, and counseling patients on their health – all performed under the supervision of a licensed physician. They also assist physicians with administering injections/immunizations, suturing lacerations, and removing foreign objects from the skin.
Having all these highly trained and skilled medical professionals on your primary care team is only going to be beneficial to your health. If you are choosing a primary care provider, choose a practice with all key members of a primary care team.
